Wishbone
The story behind “Wishbone”…
I really didn’t intended to release “Wishbone” when I wrote it. I was just in my room on Thanksgiving night after everyone went to bed and I realized my sister, Ella, and I forgot to do our annual tradition of breaking the wishbone from the turkey.
So once I remembered it after it was too late, I got super sentimental and nostalgic, and I wrote this song. I recorded a quick voice memo and texted it to my sister saying we forgot to do the wishbone, and she responded, “🔥🥲” which gave me some hope because usually, she doesn’t even respond to my songs-in-progress. 🫠
The next day, I came into my little studio in my closet and recorded it on my iPad. With a little bit of miracles and trial and error, I finished recording and mastering this song in one day. I thought a little steel guitar might sound nice so I worked up a sound and threw it in. It was the first time I’ve ever attempted a steel guitar.
I played my audio file for Ella in the car on our way to work the next morning and she started tearing up. That’s when I knew I might have something.
On Sunday morning, I told my parents about the song and said I wanted to play it for them but I’d have to wait until after church because I’d ruin my makeup (at this point, I haven’t been able to listen to the song without crying). After church, I played it for my family in the car. No surprise, we all cried. They convinced me to publish it, just at least so that we could share it with our out-of-state relatives so they could listen to it. I figured they were just acting like every biased, proud parent would but I decided to do it anyway, even despite it being after Thanksgiving. I thought it was too late to release a song about Thanksgiving.
4 days after writing the song, it was on all streaming platforms.
3 weeks later, it was playing on the radio.
That week, I posted a video of my family’s reaction to my song on the radio on TikTok and Instagram and it went semi-viral, reaching over 300,000 people between both platforms. I gained over 750 new followers and read so many amazing comments about my song and the support I’ll have in the future with any new music I have.
Wishbone came from such a heartfelt place. I’m so happy it’s found its way to all of you and has recieved so much love. I truly never thought I would see this kind of response, especially from my first song. But I’m so grateful! So THANK YOU!
Oh… and we did end up breaking the wishbone later. My dad remembered and sat it aside for us. 🧡🦃✨
